I appreciate them trying to decolonize but I don't think this is the right way to go about things.

This is dangerous, but it did work well in Israel. Are they going to establish Ashanti as the main language?

Maybe Nigeria should try and maybe they could produce their own power and have the West steal theirs

Nigeria is linguistically way too diverse to try and establish one indigenous language as lingua franca. And Ghana is not the first lol. In Kenya and Uganda they successfully established a local language Swahili as the dominant language and they still flop.

The fact that people speak English so well in Nigeria makes them valuable for international business. And Igbo, Yoruba and Haussa already enjoy official status. Films, radio, newspapers exist in those languages. The Naira has all three languages represented in their notes and it is obligatory to learn it in school.

It's risky and the Korea comparison is a little odd tbh. Don't really see the connection.

They could isolate themselves from the rest of Africa if they deteriorate their own English skills.

Yeah honestly I don't think Korea is a good example to use. They have just one language, unlike Ghana and Nigeria.

And also, who/what determines what language becomes the new norm? Can't imagine other tribes being too happy about the final decision.

There are 4 main languages

QuoteWhat would appear as a daunting task for the minister is settling on one out of the numerous languages spoken in the country. Ghana has over 46 dialects but English is the official language of Ghana and is universally used in schools in addition to nine other local languages. The most widely spoken local languages are: Ga, Dagomba, Akan and Ewe.

The Minister however did not mention or suggest any language she would want used as the medium of instruction in schools.

Yh Ghana sis, be careful.

Korea was not a colony and always had the same language. So I don't see the correlation.

The French gorls are rising cause all the francophone countries are connected and speak so well.

How can Ghanaians do business with other West Africans if they can't speak French or English? If anything they should introduce French.

Well in this situation, English is still going to be taught as a second language. Eliminating English completely would be foolish.

You guys are so lucky. You're actually able to trace where a LOT of your ancestors are from in Africa.
I'm actually more African than many African Americans. :justabit: my European slavemaster admixture is relatively moderate.
But the African ancestory paper trail for African Americans usually ends at the Atlantic ocean. :dead: :dead: :udontlookok: :stressed:
Later on I might hire a professional genealogist to really dig in and find some more information for me. I'm sure there has to be something they can do. Surely more than I can.

So far I can only dig back to my native ancestors in America. That's pretty easy. And I'm thankful for that, and grateful.
But I want to know more. :justabit:

Stuff like this pisses me off. Why does our history have to be stripped from us, but Becky can easily research her 15th great grandfather from Scotland with two clicks here and there :dead: :dead: And yes the question is obviously rhetorical but :fuming:

Making the Ashanti gurs learn Ga would make things even worse. They'd have to find instructors for each language to get the native tongue = better learning effect.

I've had some bad experiences with white people
From living with them, to working and going to school with them
It's their unwillingness to understand bigotry, and their strong desire to defend anything remotely rascist or stereotypical
'Oh it's funny!' 'Lighten up!' 'So uptight
They don't realise these stereotypes and caricatures are harmless to societies
They'll never understand that
From the racsist caricatures of other cultures, religions and races to their 'branding' everyone 2 shades darker than their pale skin with the same brush

I guess students can suscribe to the language they would like to learn, with English being secondary?
I don't knew where y'all are getting 'getting rid of English completely for 1 of 4 native languages' from :uhh:
And why would they further want to assimilate into western culture by learning French?
But a little imagination goes a long ass way
