Normani on Solo Album, Planned Missy Elliott Collaboration & Beyonce Comparisons: 'I Want to Work for My Spot'
Transitioning from being a member of a pop group to a solo artist isn't easy -- even if Normani Kordei makes it look that way.
The former Fifth Harmony member has made a rapid ascent up the pop-music hierarchy, even garnering some comparisons to Beyonc?. ?It?s flattering, but I definitely have room to grow and improve," the singer told The Fader when asked about the comparisons. "I want to work for my spot. It?s not fair that I?m the 'next Beyonc?' just yet. But I hope to become that.?
She may be new to the solo game, but after years of being bound by her role as a member of Fifth Harmony, she has a lot of ideas and is ready to explore new territory. ?I?m able to go to the studio now and write about ideas that actually mean something to me,? she says. ?I am going back to the music that I grew up with that really inspires me. I get to pull from that and incorporate those sounds into this project. It?s not like somebody else sitting in a chair over at the label has a set idea as to who these girls are going to be and us having to go along with that.?
With the power to write about what she wants comes the ability to collaborate with who she wants too. Recently, the singer teamed up with Khalid for their Love, Simon soundtrack hit "Love Lies." It doesn't stop there, though: Normani has a schedule full of artists she wants to work with. ?I?m supposed to work with Missy Elliott really soon, which I?ll go to Atlanta to do. I think I have two weeks with her. I recently worked with Stargate. I?m supposed to be working with The-Dream, Jude Demorest, London on Da Track, DJ Mustard, Priscilla Renea, Ester Dean who is a legend, there?s a lot of people [involved],? the singer says.
As for the material on her highly anticipated solo debut album, Normani doesn't want to hide her roots. "My Mom was raised in the same house in New Orleans that I was raised in as a little girl. I want to shed light on my truth,? she says.
Ummmm who ever compared her to Beyonc???

Every time the girls try to give a FULL PACKED producer line up it ends up sounding a fool.

Ci did this with Goodie?
This album is gonna be one of the best R&B/Pop albums in a while. With these producers and writers, I'm sensing a mix of B Day and LOUD.

It's so reductive, but I bet her label wants this from her. Who is she signed to?

Missy collabs either slay or fucking stink
No I?m between. Can?t say it?s something I?m looking forward to tbh
Yeah, I could care less about a Missy production nowadays, but maybe those songs wont even make the album. We'll see.
I feel like tossing a bunch of "who's who" together to create an album for a new artist is actually counterproductive.
It only ensures the shit is gonna be generic, unimaginative and bland as fck.
we'll see. Love Lies is a fuckin bop and the beat just hits every accent a top bitch would need for a good performance/video. I really doubt that she'll disappoint
And yet.... Tinashe records albums in her 1 bed room apartment by herself and with other flop producers and still makes AWFUL music.
awesome!!! cant wait to hear

I need a bold statement for the 1st single. Nothing easy or general like I luv to get 2 on :plzstop: tell us where your goodies stay! Tell the DJ to pon de fuckin replay! Be crazy in love! :gorlonfire: make us TALK queen
Normani is too talented to not cultivate her own musical identity though, which is why I?m hesitant about these big name producers. She needs her Rich Harrison, her Quincy Jones to give her that heat and really develop her own sound. I?m excited for her either way.
I'm looking forward to her.
I can tell she will PERFORM her ass off on stage...

Not necessarily. In some cases, it can work. Beyonce had top notch producers and dropped a classic first album and then u have a bitch like Nicole Sherzenburger who had big producers too, but nothing happened for her. At the end of the day, it comes down to the artist's ear for good music. And on top of that, their visuals and performances of the song. Love Lies was stalling at radio until she performed it at the BBMAs. That performance changed everything. She's the kinda chick that can elevate a song when she hits the stage. And then imagine a solo Normani music video? Whew! I'm ready.
Normani has IT. Please don?t disappoint.
