Bad Bunny Broke Boundaries in 2018. His Debut, ?X 100PRE,? Demolishes More.https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/25/arts/music/bad-bunny-x-100pre-review.html
Quote
?La Romana,? one of the standout songs from Bad Bunny?s invigorating debut album, ?X 100PRE,? begins with bachata guitar ? nimble, quick, leaning toward the traditional. Before long, it?s bolstered by a booming, viscous Latin trap beat, and the 24-year-old Puerto Rican rapper begins his trademark exultations.
For a couple of minutes, he continues this way, a blend of excitable and boastful. Then comes the switch: a quick sigh, followed by a dembow beat almost twice as fast. El Alfa, the Dominican star of dembow ? the close cousin to reggaeton ? arrives for some tongue-twisting rapping, and Bad Bunny returns with palpable urgency and attitude.
This union of two of Latin music?s best-known stars is a wild romp. And it underscores what has made Bad Bunny so valuable over the last couple of years. He is a chameleonic figure, adaptable to almost any style, with a broad, blurry-edged voice that melts at the margins.
[How a new kind of pop star stormed 2018.]
In 2018 alone, he applied it to dozens of songs, including ?Mia,? a tender come-on alongside Drake; ?I Like It,? Cardi B?s neo-boogaloo stomper that became the No. 1 song in the country; the ?Te Bot?? remix, the reggaeton posse cut that was the summit meeting of some of the genre?s leading talents; and ?Esta Rico,? a rather silly, but not ineffective, collaboration with Marc Anthony and Will Smith. His was the most pivotal pop voice of 2018, the common currency that everyone wanted to trade in.
It?s almost surprising that after that year, Bad Bunny would release something as mundane as an album. He has demonstrated how in the modern pop economy, depositing a little of yourself on other people?s songs can be just as effective a takeover strategy as asserting your place at the center ? maybe even more so. (?X 100PRE? arrived as a surprise release at the top of Christmas Eve on streaming services.)
Bad Bunny?s ?X 100PRE? has many moods.
Image
Bad Bunny?s ?X 100PRE? has many moods.
But Bad Bunny, album artist, stakes out even more territory on ?X 100PRE?; despite his seeming ubiquity, there remain areas that he?s yet to explore. If this diverse album is any indication, he?s eager to get to them.

His experiments start with pop-punk, on ?Tenemos Que Hablar,? with its sneering guitar, which parallels the flirtations with the genre from SoundCloud rap stars like Juice WRLD. And they continue on ?Otra Noche en Miami,? which combines 1980s synth-pop melancholy with Drake-style melancholy for an utterly modern downer about how a glamorous life is no replacement for love.
[Never miss a pop music story: Get our weekly newsletter, Louder.]
And then there are the sounds Bad Bunny has made his name with: the sad reggaeton of ?Solo de M?,? or the ominous hip-hop on ?Caro,? or ?Si Estuvi?semos Juntos,? which begins as an ambient mood piece and ends up a tragic reggaeton ballad.
Better than any album in recent memory, ?X 100PRE? speaks to the fluidity of contemporary Latin music: how several genres are in regular, high-level dialogue, and how the optimal performers for this moment ? think Ozuna, or J Balvin ? find common threads, vocal approaches that span rhythms.

?X 100PRE? is produced largely by Tainy, a versatile veteran of the 2000s reggaeton explosion, and La Paciencia (Roberto Rosado). (One of the few exceptions is ?200 MPH,? a buoyant club number produced by Diplo.) The music is rich with low end, serving as ballast for ethereal, sometimes claustrophobic synths. There?s little breathing room on these songs ? both Bad Bunny and his music seep into all the available space.
Often, the mood is cloudy. But Bad Bunny withholds the biggest of the previously released songs here for the end of the album, when the euphoric ?Estamos Bien? arrives like a healing sunrise after an agonizing night. And ?Mia,? his sweet-voiced Drake collaboration, is tacked on at the end, almost an afterthought. Those songs demonstrate how Bad Bunny is capable of reaching for the universal, a deployment of firm pop star instincts. But on this album, he has many moods, portending many more still to come.

QuoteSAN JUAN, Puerto Rico ? No one in Puerto Rico can go anywhere without listening to a song from Bad Bunny?s debut album ?X100PRE,? a play in letters and numbers that reads ?por siempre,? Spanish for forever.
?I?m at a gas station and the four cars [that are here] are blasting different songs of #X100Pre. I love Puerto Rico,? M?ster Medina wrote in Spanish on Twitter.
After a successful 2018, Puerto Rican Latin trap and reggaeton singer Bad Bunny ? born Benito Antonio Mart?nez Ocasio ? gave fans an early Christmas present when he dropped his 15-track album on Dec. 24 at midnight.
?Bad Bunny is releasing his album on the 24th of December. So La Nueva Religi?n will have almost the same birthday as Jesus,? wrote Frances Sol?-Santiago on Twitter, referencing the artist?s 2018 tour titled ?La Nueva Religi?n.?
Besides a very successful tour, Bad Bunny became one of the top 10 most streamed artists worldwide before dropping an album of his own.
He rose to the top of the charts by collaborating with world-renowned artists like Marc Anthony, Jennifer L?pez, Nicky Jam and many others in over a dozen songs and remixes. Apple Music included him in its ?Up Next Class of 2018? list, which aims to highlight music?s next generation of artists.
He also landed a 2019 Grammy nomination alongside Cardi B and J Balvin for ?Record Of The Year? with hit ?I Like It.?

LATINO
Latinos landed some big nominations, but 2019 Grammys don't reflect Latin music's boom
?X100PRE? was mainly produced by renowned Puerto Rican music producer Marcos "Tainy" Mas?s and includes collaborations with American DJ Diplo, rapper Drake, Dominican dembow artist El Alfa, icon Ricky Martin and others.
Bad Bunny, 24, took to Twitter to dedicate his new album to ?all my real fans! Those who follow me from the heart. Those who believe in me and in what I do! For people sure of themselves!?
But intentionally or not, the album spotlights the experiences of a generation of young Puerto Ricans who, like Benito, came of age in the island between the late 1990s and the mid-2000s ? a time in which reggaeton was starting to become more prominent as more mainstream radio stations were willing to play the music that for years was considered solely an underground genre.
Songs like ?Tenemos Que Hablar,? Spanish for we have to talk, mix the trap and reggaeton beats he's known for with the punk, rock rhythms that characterized the late 1990s and the early 2000s.
?I knew people were going to relate to this song because we?ve all gotten that message that says ?we have to talk? and we know how that always makes things tense,? said Bad Bunny during an Instagram livestream on Christmas Day.
However, his track ?Cuando Perriabas,? meaning, when you danced reggaeton, jogs the memory of Puerto Rican millennials in a particular way.
The sounds in the song resemble the "perreos" from the early 2000s, mainly sung by reggaeton artists such as Plan B, Alexis y Fido and Jowell y Randy ? reminding listeners on the island of the ?parties de marquesina,? also known as garage parties, that almost every young person attended while in middle school or high school, which consisted of dancing to the old-school reggaeton songs.

QuoteSupposedly, I already forgot you
But it's 11:34 and I remembered you (Yeh)
I have not seen you since I moved
But I dreamed about you last night and greeted you
Trying to seal the scars
I've been with model and with actresses
Surely, I never wanted them
Surely, I do not even know why I did it
And in the garage is the Bentley that you wanted so much
I ride to smoke, imagining that guides
I'm tired of threesome and orgies
I'm tired of my life being empty
And I remember you telling me
That if it did not change, I lost you
How I would like to go back to those days
Now that I'm rich, I do not have what I had
Well my Rolex does not shine like your smile
And with these whores I do not like to share the frisa
