Jim DeRogatis, the reporter who has pursued the sexual and physical abuse allegations against R. Kelly since 2000, was a guest on the New York Times? podcast series The Popcast with host Jon Caramanica last year.
During the two?s conversation, DeRogatis discussed how he first started reporting on Kelly and recalled when he first went through the documents related to the singer and Aaliyah?s annulment.
?The annulment of the Aaliyah marriage and Aaliyah?s legal claim against him had been sealed in Detroit?they were sealed by the court but those documents were provided to me,? DeRogatis said. ?It?s a harrowing document, a non-disclosure agreement on both her part and Kelly?s, vowing not to pursue further legal claims for physical abuse. So it wasn?t just an underage sexual relationship, he hit her, allegedly, according to that court document.?
Kelly?s marriage to Aaliyah was reported by Vibe magazine shortly after the release of the latter?s debut album Age Ain?t Nothing but a Number. The magazine had found that the official Illinois wedding certificate falsified Aaliyah?s age, listing the late singer as 18.
But the document vowing not to pursue further legal claims for physical abuse against Kelly hasn?t been mentioned much, even in the Surviving R. Kelly documentary series that was recently released. The only new revelation the series offered in regards to Aaliyah was that he had allegedly gotten her pregnant.
The Popcast conversation with DeRogatis can be listened to here. The part where he discusses the annulment happens around the 16:58 mark.
In related news, Kelly?s oldest daughter apologized for not being more vocal about her father, who she has been estranged from for years, in a recent statement. She also referred to him as a monster.

Are we surprised?
I think it would surprise some people who have this delusion about them being in love. :uhh: Rape Kelly is a manipulative predator who has abused and degraded women for DECADES. Aaliyah was not special to him. She was another victim he could control. Had she stayed around longer with him, I?m sure we?d hear about her being locked in rooms, smacked around, and coerced to have sex with other girls, too.
At the same time he was ?with? Aaliyah, he was abusing Tiffany Hawkins, and then making her rap on Aaliyah's album.
Aaliyah's career could have taken another turn if she stayed with him.
"Never no more" makes sense now, the conviction was real
It's amazing that she didn't become really damaged (at least that we could see) after experiencing soemthing like that so young.

She was still, she was working through all the trauma and was on her way out to the other side of it. (She was seriously falling in love again with Dame)
With all the information we have now, if you go back and look at some of her interviews she carried this sadness with her. It was trapped in her energy.
She wasn?t even with Dame in the final stages. And Dame was another dysfunctional mess. She read him the fuck down on MTAW.
I know she didn?t write lyrics but she did provide the outlines for the stories.
Just give this nigger the electric chair already.
Dame was on the ?MTAW? video set aswell as the Miami set for "RTB? they were definitely still together in her final stages
Between surviving R.Kelly, Funk Flex & this article.. I wish they?d stop putting all this on her legacy. She?s not here to defend herself. I feel so bad for Diane & Rashad.
