QuoteRCA Records sent "Dirrty" to American radio stations in September 14, 2002 as the lead single from Stripped. RCA and Sony Music Entertainment later released the song as a CD single. The song peaked at number forty eight on the US Billboard 100.

What the hell? :guys:
This song is still my jam... On the second verse in the video when she went down low and opened up her legs. Ugh! I'd immulate that move over and over.
Ffffggggggggg
it was kinda controversial, so the girls said no ma'am. Go bathe and things
Yea i still dont understand why it flopped
D
it was huge but the girls couldn't take her being that much of a skeezy whore. So they said no maam
Its funny I don't think of the 2000s being prudish but the fact that dirrty and even things like Slave 4 u were considered scandalous back then but no one would bat an eye now a days unless someone like Taylor Swift did it

Yes King
I love the fact that we can look back at stuff like this and realize that even tho charts, numbers, and plaques were mentioned, it wasn't a huge part of the conversation for the consumer/fans.
Yeah, it did peak high on the US charts, but it performed really well in other countries. Its impact >>>> chart positions. Was a good set up for Beautiful.
Why was this so controversial? Cause she wore chaps?
The song was pretty gross though, so I get it. But considering she was coming back from such a major debut, you woulda thought the first single would have charted better

Cause she was a cute lil mickey mouse girl that randomly popped up with her titties and ass out twerking and talking about fucking

Christina was a Disney girl. And back in 2000-2002, these pop girls (the likes of Britney, Christina, Jessica, etc) coming out and doing something like this was waaay over the top. I remember being in high school when this song came out and everyone was so shocked by it. Times have definitely changed though. Back then, women weren't praised for being sexually free and provocative. Climate's much more open to that now. We're talking about a time when even Brandy, Monica, Aaliyah, etc had to maintain a clean image. Imagine if Brandy came out with Dirrty in 2001.

Back then, there wasn't iTunes or anything, so chart positions were pretty much mainly based on airplay. Radio wasn't gonna play Dirrty.

They did. But radio play had more impact. Billboard changed rules later on. Reminds me of when Put It Down was starting to get lots of radio airplay and it peaked really high on the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop Charts and then as soon as the rule change occurred with iTunes purchases counting, it fell out the Top 10.

Same can be said for Britney's Hit Me Baby One More Time too. The music videos were different though. I legit remember one of my female friends back in high school saying "she just loves to be naked now" lol. And the slutty chicks wanting me to burn the CD single for them. :kii:
Black ppl really starting love her during this era too. And Dirrty would start getting played on BET Uncut.

That's not what happened. iTunes purchases were counted since like 2006.
I think you may be referring to streaming or something.or I think that's when they allowed all radio airplay to be counted on the sub charts instead of just that genre chart radios.

I do remember Brit fans being like "What the hell is this?" when it first came out too tho. Kinda like how some of Ariana's fans hated what Pharell did with Ariana. That switch from the big Max Martin tunes to something more edgy. It took a while for it to grow on me then but its everything now.

I lived for that song and video. It was so unexpected and raw.
MTV and TRL were so big at the time that I don't think anyone cared about chart positions. If your video was Top 5 on TRL you were a success.
The industry has changed so much and I think it started during 2008 when Gaga stepped on the scene.

This video got banned for promoting the illegal underground sex clubs.
She wanted to keep up with Britney so bad, but didn't know how to keep it classy.

When did Youtube start? I would say the birth Youtube and the shift from illegal downloads to legal streaming effected the chart positions more than Gaga did.

Honestly, it's always been that way, the Lambs and Gradonna fans argue their respective sales downe, it was just more visible in the mid-2000s girls because we had social media.
