Title: How do you deal with racism at work?
Post by: Drogon on May 28, 2019, 08:02:32 PM
I had a situation happen to me last week. I got called out to a home with a person with nausea and vomiting. The patient and spouse started making all kinds of racist remarks as soon as I walked up the drive way. I maintained and just ignored them bc my co-workers were handling it.  I was the only African American person there and the other responders were white.

The other 4 responders checked vitals(which were abnormal) told them that it probably was indigestion and to call back if it got worse and got them to sign a refusal of care form. Even after everything that happened. I still did more assessment and decided to do a EKG turns out it was a
massive heart attack in 2 sections of the heart and they would have died If I didn't do more interventions

:nowgorl:
They immediately apologized for their actions and were crying. I think they knew I could have easily left after the other guys got a refusal but I stilI stayed and did my job.

How do you handle racism? Just like you did my friend. Rise above it and be professional.

I think you did the right thing medic

Fur more conventional jobs, always be confrontational, always retaliate, and if that don't work, post up to your boss and ask the number for EEOC where the racist is an earshot

I'm tired of black people going high when they go low. Let them bitches die. This is why they indoctrinated the slaves with all the "be christ like" rhetoric, so we can always come to their rescue despite them treating us like shit. Fuck them honkies.

But to answer your question. If there's proof of blatant racism, I demand the same treatment as a distressed white woman. "traumatized! I need a paid vacation stress leave."  :plea:

You're right if it wasn't life or death I would be ready to MESS.

They get humbled real quick when they realize that a emt can't do the same thing as a paramedic and it's me that they need to save them.

I think it's different for you because the racism is coming from patients as you're in their home...so it's more like having racist "customers" as opposed to having racist coworkers (which would be able to handle - especially if they're overtly racist like that patient was instead of being sneaky with it).

It's tricky.

When I first read the title of your thread the first thing that came to my mind was "I don't deal with it...is how I'd deal with it".

If I ever felt someone at my job was purposely trying to offend me in that manner it'd be game over for them. My pen can do more way damage than my mouth can. Try it lol. I dare ya!

I once wrote up a POSITIVE tea about someone and my superior glanced at what I wrote...the way I put it together ...and got SHOOK. She just said Herb I wouldn't mess with you.

dsfdfdsdfdfsdsdds She had no damn clue how I can get down. And my pen already got a girl put in her place before on an unrelated matter. I wish a nigga fuckin WOULD.

Bitch, don't let the giggles and smile fool you. I can be one evil calculated bitch you don't wanna cross. Like, ever.
I don't give a fuck what race you are.

:scrumptious:

Not so much. I have had so many racist white first responders try to question my choice of treatment and even have told me NOT to do things that would save minority patient's. Luckily I'm the medic and make the final decisions on what to do.

I didn't realize the lack of minorities in healthcare until i did that FEMA deployment a few years ago.  In Belle glade Fla they made minority first responders sleep outside and would not them into their station. They lied on the first responders from NYC and said they had drugs and had them shipped back to NYC. Florida was a mess

I call them out on it, if it's in front of everyone then so be it.
My mental health and self confidence isn't going to take a hit because of your blissful ignorance.
I've recently learnt to become more upfront with my thoughts at work and voice my dislikes (constructively, rather than being a bitch).
