The piece he mentioned about slavery......its so true. Many tribes, including the Lumbee and Coharie, opened their arms and homes to runaway slaves. Lumbees are very heavily admixed with African blood for this very reason.

But not all tribes were alike....

We're so quick to run around claiming Cherokee heritage, but very few people know that Cherokees owned slaves. They sided with the Confederacy and wanted so bad to be accepted as "civilized", that they lived their lives in the same way a pale man would -- which included treating our ancestors like animals. Many of the "civilized tribes" -- CHerokee, Choctaw, etc. -- even held onto their black slaves longer than many white men did after slavery was abolished. They refused to let them go. In other words -- they were fucking sell outs.

And even TODAY they've allowed the white man's racist views to intervene with our unity. The Cherokee Indians have recently kicked out the descendants of black slaves who were given membership in the tribe after they were freed, as part of a settlement they reached with the government. These black slaves were known as "Cherokee Freedmen". Their argument is that since these black descendants of Freedmen have no Cherokee blood in their veins, they should not be allowed to access resources given to the tribe.

We all have one common enemy; but it's amazing how he's meticulously pitted us against one another.
