Title: revisiting the minimum wage convo for fast food workers
Post by: herbie on May 16, 2020, 03:05:20 AM
now that we've experienced a whole pandemic and have had to rely on "essential workers" to prepare and deliver food to us, i'd like to revisit the question about increasing their wages

do you feel that fast food workers deserve a nationwide raise of $15 minimum?

Honestly, yes, and I've felt this way since before the pandemic. I'm glad they've been referred to as essential because now there's really no "take backs" when it comes to that term. They either are or they aren't, so if they clearly ARE essential, then give them the coin they deserve.

The hell they go through working jobs that most people scoff at and feel are beneath them, is enough for me to root for them. 15 dollars wouldn't hurt ANYONE, IMO, so at least give them that.

I honestly feel as though they don't want them to get a pay rise because the idea of someone working in a fast food restaurant making almost the same money as them is revolting :dead:

that's all it is  :dead:

People either make a lot, a little, or have multiple jobs

Anyone can see they work hard. I KNOW Wendy's, McDonald's, Subway, ect are making a killing. I've yet to see one fast food place empty during this

And it's not like 15 dollars is a living wage in most places

I just saw an article that The Ice Cream Parlour raised their wages to $15 an hour and now employees are more productive, staff morale has increased, they're not being burnt out and they are actually turning up to work and on TIME thus them making more money by not spending it re-hiring more staff to fill in gaps where people don't turn up, are sick or short staffed
Dndndndj now they are steeped in applications  :dead:
It just seems so obvious to me, invest in staff and yield better results
Everyone wins

Might as well because $15 an hour is still barely sustaining most folks in major cities :dead:

Yea $15 an hr ain't no money so yea give em they bread. Tbh I have a whole new thought on this tho. More money will increase morale, productivity,  and attitudes overall. That way when shekinah is handing me my food, she acting like she got sum mfckn SENSE

America is so weird  :dead: the only country in the world I think where waiters/servers make little to no minimum wage and only generate income from tips. That sounds awful.

You say that, but I know waiters that make $60,000-$70,000  a year at high-end places

I work in the Gaming industry (casino) where most positions are tipped positions (Poker Dealer, Table Games Dealer, Cocktail Servers, CSR's,Waiters at restaurants, etc) and I can definitely tell you that that amount is the norm.

youre telling us the norm based on experience in one specific industry, though.

Take a look at this article.

https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2015/02/how-much-do-waiters-really-earn-in-tips/385515/

There are so many factors that go into how much a waitress can make . Industry, location, types of customers, etc .

People come to casinos READY and willing to SPEND a lot of money. lol you have to remember that.

And people who are into gambling are less likely to have any issue tossing money around with no thought about it . Which means Ching Ching for the service staff

When u work in high end places or DT I know u make MORE money but I think it's pretty standard for people to make decent money in that industry,  which is exactly why they get away with not having to pay minimum wage. I have known people that work in standard ass restaurants and coming home with $200 & $300 dollars in tips. I know someone that was a bartender in a DT hotel and made over 100k a yr. Dont cry for them, they doing ight :omf:

And actually now that I think about it,  I think there is sum provision that if someone doesn't make a certain amount in tips or something,  the restaurant actually does pay the worker some more money or something
