There's a part in the first chorus where she says "in the whole wide world" but she says the last word twice, "world world" real quick. I think it kind of represents a fractured mentality. That and too in the very beginning when she sings "Sorry you're sorry (sorry)." That last little whispered sorry :plzstop:
The way she did little things to contribute to the overall feel of the song as multiple versions of her mind is INSANE :plzstop:
And in the video where she's singing in the room there's the ashtray with extinguished blunts and incense, representing her trying to find some way to calm her anxiety/find some peace.
Yesssss the way the song has multiple personalities!
It really feels like 3 different mindstates of Brandy (like in the video) are on the record!
I hoped everyone peeps how it's 3 verses (instead of the typical 2) and THEN a bridge.
The entire fabric of this song is genius. The way some of her vocals cut in and out of each other. NOT JUST LAYERED on top or under, like literally cutting into each other as to interrupt... Like....
:uhh:
A broken ash tray, but she's calm

I'd like that grammy recognition for this song, and I'd LOVE to hear her sing B7 live!

I LIVE for threads like this. I saw a breakdown of the song and another similar interpretation on YouTube for her music video and i looooost it:

This woman is an ACTRESS through song. Like ... fucking wow
there are so many different ways to emote and she did that on this album for me. Borderline is that girl
And there's no right or wrong way to interpret a song, as the consumer and listener
Brandy gave us options. You can take it how you want, however it may grab you and i LOVE that.
Now you got me about to go through and analyze all this song to see what else I missed. :plzstop:
Fuck I just noticed for the first time how @ the 2:45 min mark in the song when she sings ,,in the whole wide world", there's this weird almost drunk sounding distortion on the word ,,world". When you listen to the song normally you don't really hear it cause it blends in nicely but this is such a cool detail that I didn't even hear before I listened closely...

I know I made this thread about Borderline but Unconditional Oceans gives me the same vibe in terms of interpreting her mindset/the sonic feel through her vocals. There's this shaky affectation she does with her vibrato throughout the song that just contributes to the entire feel as a whole. It's especially noticeable during the "where we gooooin? we divin in the oooooocean" and "the storrrrm insiiiiide" portions of the chorus.

im hoping we're waiting for this because she wants to perform and present it in a really unique way
Maybe recreate the atmosphere of the video in a way, Idk. I definitely need performances to become a thing again so hopefully they are discussing that and rehearsing

Not even gassing but she def needs to be part of any curriculum involving pop/r&b music.
Matter of fact, where the fuck is the b7 performances?! Now that Verzuz is over. Brandy roll these shits the fuck out!
I'm sure Brandy doesn't even realize she did all of that... She said so herself she is not that deep or think that hard about stuff
...Which would actually make her a lot more genius than we think

I don't think she realize it in the sense of how genius it is. To her it's just a part of telling the story in the song, a part of crafting a great song but no Bran what you are doing vocally is GENIUS! No one else is doing it. Yes the girls stack and run but who is MANIPULATING their voice and tone the way she is and her PLACEMENT....
