Some notes from the convo:
- People don't get fat from eating things like Mickey Dee's
- "Before & After" weight loss pics are problematic
- Soul food is demonized as unhealthy, and is OK to eat on a regular basis because our ancestors did
- The war against obesity has racist roots

People are idiots anyway... Soul food isn't a problem over indulging in it is the problem. Plus you can be slim and have the same issues as an overweight person...being overweight just makes it more likely you will have the problems but doesn't guarantee you will have any of the body ailments associated with being fat.
fat people have EVERY excuse on why its okay to be fat
racism! phobia!
when your LARD ass croaks from the 'betes or heart strain from carrying around all that FAT, whos gonna be to blame then? huh?
it is OKAY to acknowledge that being fat is NOT healthy, while also acknowledging that fat oeople are NOT less than and are just as deserving of love and respect as anybody else.
but when they start trying to turn everything into an attack against them and jumping through HOOPS to victimize themselves for being fucking fat it just makes me wanna LASH :uhh:
I think Harriet should have gotten women on the panel who Do not identify as "fat girls".... for this convo , who are just as informed and would be completely fair in the conversation.
Or at least mixed it up with one woman who identifies as a "fat gorl" and one who isn't. That woulda been perfect and more balanced. Less emotionally driven.
It's very difficult for a lot of people to set their emotions aside in conversations like these when they actually "identify" as being a "fat" person.
And that's completely understandable. This convo coulda been a lot more multidimensional though.
It was drenched in underlying emotion

There's somewhat of a reasonable argument that "before" pics could give an "eww! I was so fat and that's not good!" And the "after" could give "wow so much better ! Slimmer is better!"
It's worth entertaining that idea...
But it's all about how you look at it . For many people posting "before and after" is simply measuring the success that came after work they've put in to accomplish a personal goal.
It's not exactly the easiest thing in the world to do, so I would just shut up eat my food and let them celebrate their accomplishment, in whichever way they decide to do so.

I think that the whole "fat people" thing could be part of the problem.
it may contribute to people taking a substance that grows on their body (fat) and making it into an entire identity, which in turn makes it a lot more touchy and emotional for them to tackle and approach logically.
"Little people" makes sense because they cannot change the fact that they're little . "Asian people" makes sense cuz they cannot change the fact that they are Asian.
But turning fat into some sort of "community" draws a line between those who identify as that and those who do not. And I think both sides contribute to that.
These conversations could be a lot more logical and less emotional if those lines would be erased a bit. IMO
