Does requesting music at radio stations even work anymore?

I was asking because someone mentioned doing a request party for "B&P", but I feel like it's kinda pointless.

Payola isn't new.  It's been going on for many years.  It probably does help to request a song.  It shows interest. But I'm sure payola plays a part, too.

we should have some sort of "B&P" party, but in a different way.
Picking a particular radio station twitter account and posting links to the song, asking for airplay.
not too much, not too little, just enough where we could support and not become a&r's.
