Quote from: Rio de Atlanta on February 12, 2023, 03:57:20 PMI think a lot of people are having flashbacks to days of "I'm not Black, I'm OJ."

It's one of those things where even if this person means no harm at all .. which in this case I don't think Idris means any harm and doesn't need to be crucified...

There is a history of people doing and saying these things with a lot of anti-black underlining ...

OJ Simpson probably being the most famous example .

I'm not personally outraged but i can understand the side eyes and knee jerk reactions to the comment .

not everyone is OJ though. does young black twitter even know who OJ is?  i havent even seen the comments but im sure  all of them are going to the extreme with it
yes everyone isn't OJ which is what I kinda said in the post u just quoted.

But sometimes it's about understanding why people react to things a certain way luv. Just Adding one or two more dimensions to our thinking

OJ is one example but it's not unheard of in general.

"Girlfriends" even had an episode where they touched on it . Like literally touched on this Idris situation specifically lol

Joan's famous actor boyfriend at the time was getting dragged by Maya for being spotted in an interview saying "stop calling me a black actor, I'm just an actor"

With maya saying: "like there's something soooo wrong about being called a black actor! 🙄 😡 "

Joan's boyfriend was later dragged more in the episode by two other girls at a poetry reading where they basically used their poetry to  call him a coon and a sell out.

So it's not just bored twitter gorls ... some people may genuinely be offended . I'm not personally offended  but I get those who are.
Your last sentence is my issue. Ppl are just looking for stuff to get offended by  . I'm over it

King kinda ate my other King right uhp
he makes perfect sense.

it's almost as if idris feels the "black" prefix is some sort of handicap that he brought upon himself and can reverse by himself

thats not the way it works.

if there's an objective behind this all, he's windmilling at the wrong thing. the conversation needs to be on creating more space and opportunity for black actors

which is why tyler always holds a special place in my heart. regardless of how people feel about the quality of his work, he was employing a lot of these Black actors at a time when it wasn't trendy to do it for movies, etc.

Significant Discovery: First known Black American family of Kalmyk descent

Takeaways: Be prepared to pivot, even when you think you're on the right track. Be OK with being wrong so you can get things right.

Kalmyks are tribal Mongolic people who settled in Russia. It's estimated that only 300,000 Kalmyk descendants exist worldwide - with only 3,000 in America.

Yea, I get what he's trying to say. He's not being anti black.. but he probably should've known this wasn't gonna be received well. Sdddccddd

I think he's saying he just doesn't want his opportunities and accomplishments limited. As others said, it's obviously a much more complicated conversation than just that... but yea, I think that's simply just all he was trying to say.
