She's saying the black woman is God, not specifically herself and it's a play on Jay-Z's nickname "Hova" hence why she mentioned God complex. Don't be silly.

Yassssssss

It's more of an empowering statement than anything

She just switched up the pronoun. It's a feminist approach to language used pertaining to God, whose gender is not defined.

I take it you havent seen the video...
Because...

This

flashes on the screen as that line is said.

:udontlookok:

but that doesn't make any sense
why say it in the song and then say that?

it's a bit contradictory.

Because JACK says it and she is saying she isn't God.

For me, I took it as "gorl it's just a song. Don't take everything I say too literally."

The "I plugged my menses with pages from the Holy Book" statement is what I found unnecessary. :uhh:

How was that unnecessary? That was talking about how Christianity (in the hands of men) has been used to oppress and shame women. It was beautiful poetry.

All this tells me is that y'all ain't deep LOL.

As people already said, it was a feminist approach. It's about praising and affirming feminine qualities over/or right beside the masculine qualities. Putting them on equal footing. One big message of the album is how Jay aka Hova has a God complex and needs to be brought back down to earth. Bey goes through different stages- she tries asserting herself over him, which isn't the answer, but she does need to realize her self-worth and ultimately it's both of them being human and vulnerable and humble that brings them back together again.
