On Monday, #Miami officers received a 911 call about a man with a gun threatening suicide. According to officers, they attempted to negotiate with two men on the scene.  #CharlesKinsey, a therapist who works with people with disabilities and one of the two men on the scene, informed the officers that the gentleman he was with was autistic and that he was assisting him after he had run away from the group home. Kinsey even lays on the ground and puts his arms up to prove that he is unarmed and not dangerous. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

At some point during the negotiation one of the responding officers shoots Kinsey in the leg, despite Kinsey having his hands up the entire time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

?I thought it was a mosquito bite, and when it hit me I had my hands in the air, and I?m thinking I just got shot!? Kinsey said in an interview from his hospital bed. ?And I?m saying, ?Sir, why did you shoot me?? and his words to me were, ?I don?t know.?? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

According to police, the autistic man ?had something in his hand,? which in the cell phone video above, Kinsey could be heard identifying the object in the man?s hand as a toy truck. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

After shooting Kinsey, police rushed him, pat him down and put him in handcuffs. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The officer, whose name has not been released, has been placed on administrative leave. It?s unknown whether he will face any charges. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

It?s crazy to me that even though the autistic gentleman was the one with ?something in his hand,? the #AfricanAmerican man still managed to be the one that got shot.
