And I do think somewhere in the back of my mind, I didn't want to claim Cherokee, because I mean, EVERYONE does. With not a receipt in sight. It's a joke now anytime someone says they're of Cherokee descent.

So I think that immediately when my grandmother said that her mother said we are Cherokee, it was like...Granny, lets find out the TRUTH.  There was no doubt based on the evidence that my family has quite immediate Native ties, but it was like I was set out looking for evidence that we were something other than Cherokee.

I just didn't believe it. But that again goes back to the "joke" surrounding anyone who claims it. Even if it is my great grandmother.
