QuoteMAD LOVE (Review)

The album opens on the beautiful piano ballad 'Music.' which is a detailed track about her family - her upbringing, her mother, her father's passing... one particular line that hits us the hardest is "went on the road to make my daddy proud, when I lost him, so I sang to the crowd, my only hope is that he's looking down thinking "oh my God my daughters doing it now"." CRIES.

We switch up the beat for 'I Can Only.' with feature star Alessia Cara where the two women battle it out over a synthy beat... think old school The Weeknd meets Troye Sivan. '**** Apologies.' feat. Wiz Khalifa follows and you know we love it. It's got attitude, swagger and it's completely different for a JoJo single, which we also love.

'FAB.' features Remy Ma and is a sassy ass track that makes us want JoJo to have words with exes... no-one's jumping on the bandwagon with this one JoJo... it's just a really good song. Sonically similar to 'I Can Only.' so there's a nice theme of blending and its taken us about 3 weeks to work out but 'FAB' stands for "fake ass bitches" and not a shortened FABULOUS.

The title track 'Mad Love.' is a fun, vocally incredible track with bold instruments throughout. It really gives us Christina 'Back To Basics' vibes and we frigging love that. In terms of album highlights, we pretty much have a place in our hearts for every song... but the tracks 'Vibe.' and 'Honest.' are deffo two for us... both two completely different tracks... 'Vibe.' sounds like a 2006 uptempo urban track that you'd have expected someone like LeToya or Amerie to do... honestly, it's so good. It almost has a bit of a Island beat feel about it. We are deffo going to dutty whine to this track!

'Honest.' is a midtempo track that really hits home about a broken relationship where JoJo wants love and the guy wants a free ride. It feels like two tracks TBH because the first minute or so has JoJo lamenting how her lover has left her feeling cold and then it switches up and whilst it remains the same tempo, the hook comes in... "it might not be what you wanted, but at least I'm honest". The tempo switches up and whilst it's a midtempo, it's kinda a bouncy midtempo.

'Like This.' is next up and it's a really cool track. Again... it borders on this uptempo midtempo track. It feels very Troye Sivan, but sassier and way more synched to JoJo. TBH the only Troye Sivan link is the sound. JoJo is feeling a little naughty on this track and wants to remind her lover of exactly what he likes. On 'Edibles', JoJo literally takes us to church and back (and probably hell) as she laments over whether she is in a relationship with a man or if it's a one stand. It's a really cool track and got one catchy lil' hook going on.

'High Heels' is the chance for JoJo to call out her cheating man and YES she drops the M-bomb. She isn't happy. She's getting dressed up and going to look DAMN GOOD FOR ALL OF HER CHEATING BFs friends. It has this really fun alarm / siren sound throughout the track and honestly... is it 'Ring The Alarm' part II?!

The album ends on tour closer 'I Am.' which is honestly just as beautiful on record as on stage. The track is a beautiful and personal retrospective track for JoJo to take a look at herself and assess that even with flaws she is a human being with feelings. It's a real belter moment for JoJo and one that a lot of us will take through to our next chapters.

SOOO... basically rambles over. We love JoJo and we love 'Mad Love.' and every track. Were actually struggling to find a filler. The standard version is only 11 tracks and the deluxe has an additional 4 tracks (inc. the MNEK track 'Good Thing'). If you're a fan of 'Say Love' and basically JoJo's mixtapes... this is the album for you. It's R&B/Urban/Soul at it's best and were so happy that finally... after all these years, we've had the chance to nurture and appreciate JoJo's third album because let's be honest... we've been waiting for this album for basically 10 years.
