I think it's more so paying homage to Paris Is Burning. This definitely has more mainstream platform than the former solely due to Ryan Murphy's name and leverage he has with FX.

I like that Ryan is involved

He's credited as one of the creators and producers. They need a team of black and brown queer and trans writers, though. Janet Mock is a producer as well so that's reassuring that they were intentional about hiring persons of color to tell these stories. Other than that, he only needs to provide and open doors. No white imaginations over something that was birthed from real life trauma, i.e., Madonna's "Vogue".
