I don't think the industry is to blame. I think the consumers just don't want that niche based, fad music. Being a gay artist is still seen as a gimmick and a fad to very large degree. This transcends race because look at Frank Ocean. With all the hype he gets, he?s still indie as hell.
I disagree. I think it all starts with the record labels. They're the ones who think they have the target audiences all figured out. Music listeners really don't care imo, they just consume what they receive. Record labels decide beforehand who they support financially. Who knows who's being declined right now for being too black, queer or whatever?
So you don't think straight men and women aren't aware of who is gay and isn't bias toward them because of it? A lot of people don?t feel comfortable listening to a man singing about another man.
Also, you don't think being gay is seen as trendy? I recall people saying Frank Ocean was only popular because he came out as bisexual. That could be true given the fact that radio didn?t even touch his music last go and the album flopped in the streaming era. Sam Smith is doing just ok compared to the last go. This latest album doesn?t seem set up to have the same hits and accolades as the last one.
Also, gay men and women can?t be open on their albums. They have to be very specific with their pronoun placements and stuff. That is homophobia. Then a again, gay people also buy into homophobia and are just as bias towards their own.
Now, there probably is homophobia in the industry, but at the end of the day, I feel it all falls on the consumers.
