Remember when those Olympic swimmers made up a lie that someone had robbed them over seas at the Olympics? They did get some blowback from that. They lost all their endorsements and had a bunch of media coverage.  But no one got in any legal trouble, no one said they could never participate in the Olympics again, no one else got in trouble just for being associated with them. One of the guys even redeemed his image by appearing on Dancing with the Stars.
