What kinda Lifetime movie villain?    

• Barry's gf had broke up with him in 2006 and she proceeded to sue him in 2007 for harassment and blowing up her car. He also used the internet to spread rumors she had HIV and the IP adress from the source traced back to him. He also used the label funds to buy out a hair salon she was employed with and fired her from it. He hired a PI to follow his ex and make threatening anonymous calls. She was rewarded $5.8M in the lawsuit and Barry still hasn't paid it.

Then why won't they release the music?

Major Cliffs on the state of Aaliyah and other's music:

• when the music industry transitioned from CDs to digital downloads and streaming Blackground records did not participate. The artists stopped making money. This is when he was harboring Aaliyah's catalogue as well as her unreleased vocals. He owned all her masters except for the first album (AANBAN) hence why it's available.

• Blackground stopped operating as a company and sold its stake to their publishing company Reservoir media management.

• Reservoir now owns her catalogue and has been the entity licensing her samples to all these rappers. Those projects are denounced by her family and her friends/frequent collaborators Timb & Missy.

• Drizzy tried to get behind a posthumous album for baby girl but his producer backed out because he was uncomfortable w/o the family's approval.

• In 2013, Craze Digital (a distribution company) illegally posted her music to iTunes and it got removed. They attempted this again in 2017 to no avail.

• Jojo's first two albums (2003-2006) that feature her only hits

Toni Braxton album - Libra (2005)

Tank's albums - Force of Nature (2001), One Man (2002), Sex, Love, and Rain (2007)

and any Timbaland and Magoo album released before 2007 were all collateral due to the Reservoir deal and cannot be streamed anywhere.

Sounds like they're hoarding these projects, letting them accrue in value and will sell them off to some private bougie collector that will probably owe the rights for his own amusement 🙄

I found this article from the LA Times. Overall, it sounds like Resevoir's deal allows them to do just about everything EXCEPT put her and other Blackground artists' music on streaming platforms.

The arrival (and disappearance) of Aaliyah's greatest hits collection is the latest in saga of late singer's catalog

Since gaining rights to her catalog in 2012, Reservoir has done little with the music outside of licensing, including authorizing ASAP Rocky and Chris Brown to sample her material. Per its deal, it can't act as a distributor of any of her recorded music the way a label would.

"As the music publisher of many titles performed by Aaliyah, our role is to represent her catalog's songs, songwriters, and copyrights through careful administration and licensing, as it is our privilege to do. Our representation allows us to make this music available for licensing in films, TV, and advertisements; clear it for sampling in new recordings; celebrate its creative reinterpretations on sites like YouTube; uphold its rights in legal disputes; and support any new releases that may be made available to the public by record labels," a statement on its site reads.

Reservoir declined to comment further.

There has to be some kind of psychological reason why he's holding on to these albums, he's a spiteful old man.
Let's face it, no ones checking for that one Toni album or those Tank albums like that 
Aaliyah albums are the ones that everyone's looking, it's his last valuable bargaining chip because Blackground ain't shit without them.
