QuoteMartin and Trina Daniel, married for over 20 years, both died of COVID-19 within hours of each other, leaving behind two teenage children facing an unimaginable loss.

The Daniels met at Savannah State University in the 1990s before Martin Daniel headed to Tuskegee University in Alabama for graduate school, their nephew, Cornelius Daniel, told ABC News.

Cornelius Daniel said his aunt and uncle were hesitant to get vaccinated in part due to the legacy of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, which charted syphilis progression in unknowing Black men from the 1930s to the 1970s.

Martin Daniel died at home on July 6. Trina was hospitalized and died that night

At least they weren't apart for too long, that's the only silver lining to this story

Please get vaccinated

Nine

Sad, but I don't feel sorry for them.

Their deaths were mostly preventable.

I think a lot of Hesitance in the black community is fueled by distrust of the government and a lot of misinformation sometimes

It's easy for us to wag our fingers and say "shoulda got vaccinated shalequa! Dassit!" without understanding why they were hesitant

Not everyone is gonna be an independent thinker - some are quick to buy into whatever they read . That's just how we operate sometimes unfortunately

And some black ppl let our general distrust of America as a whole fuel a decision not to move forward with any instructions given by the government to have something shot into our arms .

Most of it isn't the most reasonable or logical ... but fueled by emotion

health inequality and poverty in the black community around the world is real

And I also think white hesitance and black hesitance with this vaccine mess are totally different .

A lot of these white people WANT to be oppressed in some way , and take an opportunity to "fight the power " 🙄 and go against the grain.

While u have a lot of black people who have somewhat of a very real and understandable fear that America is after them to take us out ...

Like they're literally scared , not just tryna be edgy and rebellious.

I'm actually tired of that Tuskegee mess being used as an excuse.

Everyone is taking the same vaccine.

Black people need to get it together. period.

For me it's like what's the alternative?
Get Covid and die a painful death unable to breath?

No thank! I'll take my chances with the shot

I agree but do we really know this to be true?

Black people kind of have every right to question anything being injected into their bodies.

Now that was really low. But true.

I'm not even a conspiracy girl but HOW do we know the vaccine is the same in urban areas as it is in predominantly-white areas?

We have to remember that black single mom with two kids who has little or no time to keep up with what's what when it comes to info

I have the luxury of having ample time to watch CNN , check news updates as I'm working at home etc . As I'm sure a lot of us do in some way

I have the time to know enough to realize why it's unreasonable to think a certain way.

But don't forget those who don't. Not everyone is gonna be well educated and informed about everything . And some are very scared .
