Wow, four siblings? We all must have so many third cousins that we don't even know exist.

My grandmother remembered her aunt Leola.

They called her "Aunt 'Ola". :dead:
Last night was her first time finding out her real name.

Which is why I am glad I didn't get these names from my grandmother and found them myself. I woulda been searching everywhere for someone named Ola.  :plzstop: :plzstop: :plzstop:

She also remembered her Uncle James. :stressed:

Wow, did you find out the specific tribe and everything?  You should apply for membership, you actually have proof and family members you can name!

We're Coharie.

Harnett County.

This is a map of Indian Tribes that were/are in North Carolina.

She was married on the settlement as well. :stressed:
They have my great grandfather listed as white here, but he was just really light skindededededed. He wasn't Native though.

I was thinking of tribal membership.
You're right, this is what they look for. Proof that your ancestors were on their land and had their names.

My grandmother was raised in Harnett.  :plzstop: :plzstop: She barely talks about it though. But I guess when you're used to it, it's nothing exciting, that was her home. For me it's new and exciting, for her it's just where she grew up at. lol

what's amazing is that I live/work in Wake County, right next to Harnett :stressed:

it's such a blessing to know that my ancestors were the first people here on these NC lands that I walk on everyday. settled on it hundreds and thousands of years before whitey laid his fucking hands on it. I need to go visit Harnett, just ride around and really take it all in.

wait, this slays
it seems like it's empowering, all cliches aside, to know where you come from and put a name to the individuals

!!!!!!!!!

It's almost unbelievable. And I think empowering is the perfect word. It really gives you a sense of who you are, where you come from. I know it sounds weird but it gives me a great sense of fulfillment.

The heritage is so close...this is my grandmother's mother....and her aunts and uncles. :uhh: Like Granny, you really come from a Native American family and was born and raised on the fucking Coharie settlement :usureuok:

she's so unbothered by it all :plzstop: I think it has to do with the fact that her mother told her that we are Native, but Chief had 12 kids, and my Grandmother was one of the youngest. I doubt she had time to sit around and discuss Native history and heritage :plzstop: she doesn't really know how special this is.

But my Grandmother is willing to learn more about who she is so I'm thankful and happy to help her.

Ive been trying on my mom's paternal side too.Realy all sides. One of the hurdles is that I'm from the South and pronounciation of last names aren't always accurate and get passed on.I just found out late last year my grandfather's name was different from what we've always known.Another thing.I dont trust a lot of those ancestry sites.

I'd imagine it would be more difficult if you don't know much about your family at all.

Ancestry.com records are based on government census records, birth certificates, marriage certificates. I can understand someone not trusting the DNA portion, but these are government records in their Search database. Very black and white.

Like this: To the left of the image below is an actual official COPY of my great grandparent's marriage certificate that I can print out.

This portion of the site simply EXTRACTS government collected information and puts it into type form to make it easier to read, and gives you the option of printing the official document for your records.

The trick is, knowing where to look for the information. Actually having the information. Because if you don't know where to start, it can make things almost impossible. Luckily I already know a lot about my mom's side of the family (great grandma Chief's name, etc.,) so for me this was simply going a bit more in depth.

I can't believe you keep finding out more and more mess. This is so crazy. It's like you can reach out and touch them.

I'm excited to find out my mess. I'll try when I get some free time.
