Walmart pulling Juneteenth ice cream after social media backlash

Walmart is recalling its ice cream commemorating Juneteenth after it received heavy backlash on social media, with many critics calling out the company for using the holiday as a marketing scheme.

"Share and celebrate African-American culture, emancipation and enduring hope," the packaging on the swirled red velvet and cheesecake flavored ice cream reads.

"Juneteenth holiday marks a celebration of freedom and independence," Walmart said in a statement to FOX Television Stations. "However, we received feedback that a few items caused concern for some of our customers and we sincerely apologize. We are reviewing our assortment and will remove items as appropriate."

Users on social media are instead directing Walmart customers to buy Creamalicious ice cream, a Black-owned brand on sale in stores that features a red velvet cheesecake flavor.

The Hill has reached out to Walmart for a comment.

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, is the day in 1865 when the remaining enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were informed by Union troops of their freedom under the Emancipation Proclamation.

In June of last year, President Biden signed a bill making Juneteenth a federal holiday, which allows most federal employees to take the day off in observance.

Significant Discovery: First known Black American family of Kalmyk descent

Takeaways: Be prepared to pivot, even when you think you're on the right track. Be OK with being wrong so you can get things right.

Kalmyks are tribal Mongolic people who settled in Russia. It's estimated that only 300,000 Kalmyk descendants exist worldwide - with only 3,000 in America.

I'm not really seeing the outrage here

It's an officially recognised holiday now and this is just capitalism at work

yes, but Juneteenth is different.

these companies need to realize this can't be treated like any other federally recognized holiday
you're talking about something involving the enslavement of human fucking beings. the most brutal and disgusting part of American history.

and not "our story" perched on that box
im pretty sure Great Value isn't Black owned so there's really no "our" to be found here....

there's a LOT wrong with this. nothing wrong with doing something to honor the holidy, but tread lightly and be SMART.

i'd recommend actually hiring Black people who are of the culture for their input as these products are developed.

if the gorls are gonna start drawing lines in the sand of which federal holidays are ok to touch and which aren't then where does it end?

i will agree that the whole 'our story' thing is cringeworthy but besides that, this kind of thing just comes with the territory IMO.

well u agree this was off in some way. it missed the mark and SHOULD be pulled.

im definitely offended by it and can understand why others are too. i see the outrage.

great value needs to go back to the drawing board, preferably with Shalequa and Dayquan there to provide input that will save them from another lashing.

sometimes it all goes back to the simple concept of :

"its not WHAT you say, it's HOW you say it."

that applies to marketing as well. I'd even say it goes DOUBLE  when ur selling something.

especially when it involves a sensitive topic

i would fire whoever green lit this. especially with that "our story" mess on it.

oh ok, we're talking about two different things here.

i thought people were outraged because walmart were releasing juneteenth themed ice cream in the first place.

you and whoever else is outraged are free to feel how you feel about the message.

its all intertwined ultimately

what was done and who did it .
How something was handled and who actually handled it.
What was said , and who said it .

But I def went to find a pic of the actual ice cream before forming my opinion .

the gorls literally go hunting for something to be outraged by

Justice Jackson

Dead.. Not with these dry and ashy looking hands on the front, they won't.

Maybe they should have partnered with Patti Labelle or something
Ketanji Jackson has come this far by faith.

Ketanji Brown will still beatcho ass.

u don't have to hunt for something that's put on shelves for u to purchase and is directly marketed to u.

It's kinda in ur face.

If anyones "hunting" it would be the company who put this out there - seeking a quick coin. But so thirsty for a catch that they weren't well prepared enough to secure it .

they need to work on their bait .

I think some of the outrage is that there is a black owned brand called  Creamalicious that they could have highlighted that makes the same flavor, versus trying to push their own brand.  They all ready sell it at Walmart too.

i saw that as well
its a black owned brand

while other companies do offer "red velvet" ice cream ..
that "red velvet cheesecake" flavor is a very specific flavor offered by creamalicious almost exclusively from what i can see.

i searched for it and creamalicious is the first thing that popped up.

they deserved to be dragged for this. and im sure that ice cream probably tasted like shit
