Li wasn't a bad singer at all. She was inconsistent live but she was also very young and that could perhaps be contributed to stage fright. Her tone is iconic and I love her Low & Falsetto notes. Would've loved to see how she'd sound today

Anytime she was asked to sing acapella in person she slayed and sounded just like the records. Her being a "studio singer" was never the case. 

Getting on stage, transposing those light head notes into the chest and something more throaty to project more, was where she struggled. Then dance (mic always on), etc. I think her room for growth was definitely in overall stage performance, which she wasnt afforded time to achieve.
