Quote from: The definition on July 06, 2023, 04:27:36 AMA number of artists are selling their catalogs, like justin Bieber sold his for $200 million, MJ's estate wants to sell half of MJ's catalog for $900 million.... Seems like the forecast for these catalogs is that they won't earn so much in the future, but then again why are these companies investing in these catalogs if their future returns look bleak, that's the question
i wouldn't say future returns look "bleak" cuz it that were the case no one would touch the catalogs at all
The artist is most likely just able to find a company that wouldn't mind having their catalog in their back pocket
Nelly has songs that I'd say have a lot of potential to be licensed for ads/marketing etc and other creative ways I'm sure a company could find use for it
Ultimately I'd say it's about selling the catalog while you can still make a very cute coin - selling at 50 million in 2023 instead of waiting until 2040 when its still sellable - but the value may have dropped to 35 million
I'm super confident there's a lot of strategy behind these decisions - on both sides
