Usually 3, sometimes 2. Also 1 VP debate
The June debate between Biden and Trump was an anomaly. They're usually held later in the election cycle after the candidates are locked in.
It's a miracle that things have played out this way. If the debates were held as normal after the conventions, we'd be stuck with Biden.
