The Only BLACK Kalmyks

Project started: 2014 Wrapped up: 2024

Significant Discovery: First known Black American family of Kalmyk descent

Takeaways: Be prepared to pivot, even when you think you're on the right track. Be OK with being wrong so you can get things right.

Kalmyks are tribal Mongolic people who settled in Russia. It's estimated that only 300,000 Kalmyk descendants exist worldwide - with only 3,000 in America.

Quote from: RAY7 on August 28, 2025, 02:06:56 PMInteresting if this really happened to her. I doubt ppl are bold enough to say this to her in person, but IDK how it truly is over there in Napa where she lives. I'm definitely thinking it's white ppl asking these questions because we usually mind our business over here, and it's not uncommon to have children and siblings with different looks.
my first thought was its white people

even if Black people think something like that we know how sensitive those things are (especially questioning a Black woman about her kids)...so we'll usually keep our mouths closed

but i def dont think she's sitting around making up lies about her real life experiences

she has no reason to lie about that and her kids are actually mixed and appear as mixed/ambiguous.

Quote from: stillpretty on August 28, 2025, 01:00:54 PMTamera does a lot sometimes but this is believable

They are gaslighting tf out of her in the comments

"Those kids look black! Nobody askin u dat!"

As if her kids look like Tias.

Her kids do kinda have different phenotypes. And it's not far fetched that some people think they look mixed and ambiguous. They're mixed race kids.

And they are definitely more ambiguous than Tamera. I was kinda shocked when I found out Tia and Tamera were biracial as I'm sure many of us were

But I can't see people being shocked when her kids tell someone they're mixed. So it makes sense some (who don't know Tamera) question if they're her kids.

This happens a lot to black people who have mixed kids - even tho Tamera is mixed herself, she's still very black presenting. So her story checks out

Maybe people are just giving her grief cuz she's Tamera and she's talking about race. Enjdndbdndb

d

Nobody is asking her this. And it's not even because of that.

I could see if it was some random white man's whore but nobody is walking up to Tamera Mowry and asking that.

i think its White people asking mostly and it would make sense as they'd be much less likely to know who Tamera is.

pretty sure she lives in a predominately White area with those kids and i can only imagine the looks and questions she gets
especially when she's walking around with them without her husband there to indirectly/quietly explain things with his appearance

it's not hard to believe at all

do i think millions of people are running up to her to ask? no, and she didn't say that. but i believe her shared experience is true.

some people are actually bold enough to question potentially sensitive things to your face, even if they dont know you.

if something about someones appearance doesn't match up or make much sense to them, or match with their expectations of how certain people should look, they become interested and almost invested in placing that person in a box

and will solicit said person's assistance by asking a series of questions that are curious at best, invasive/offensive at worst.

but id say mostly non-Black people are extra bold with it.

Black people will at least have some sort of rapport with a person before trying to dig into their family trees.

even Black forums/people are discussing and seemingly intrigued by the mess

"Crazy how her 3/4 White daughter is darker than her  "

Tamera is NOT lying yall.

As I said above, many people become INVESTED in "making sense" of things when it comes to the appearance of others and how it relates to their origins.
