I think some animals are instinctively protective of children. The gorilla probably would have mauled an adult to death but they show a bit more leeway with a child.

The funny thing there's an ape at our zoo here that won't mate with the females, but the zoo keepers said he's attracted to male humans and masterbates to them and the zoo is still trying to figure out why he won't mate with the girl gorillas.
