New 'Star Trek' series coming to CBS - for one episode - in 2017
More than a decade since the last "Star Trek" series left the airwaves, a new one is set to begin a new mission in 2017 -- but with the exception of a single episode, it won't air on traditional TV.
CBS has given a straight-to-series order for a new "Trek" series that will premiere in January 2017. Alex Kurtzman, who produced co-wrote both the 2009 "Star Trek" film and its sequel "Star Trek Into Darkness," is executive producing.
Here's the catch, though: After the first episode airs on the CBS network, subsequent episodes will run exclusively on CBS All Access, the network's subscription-based digital service. All previous "Trek" series are available on All Access.
"There is no better time to give 'Star Trek' fans a new series than on heels of the original show's 50th anniversary celebration," CBS Television Studios head David Stapf says in a statement. "Everyone here has great respect for this storied franchise, and we're excited to launch its next television chapter."
The new series will introduce new characters, but its setting and other details aren't available at the moment
