I love that they're talking about their culture and intelligence before they came to the UK to find that most of the people there lacked these things.

QuoteGreat documentary but I think it's the last thing the black community should be worried about.  Top of the list should be the high levels of mental illness and how psychiatry is used to silence and shun them.  There is no medical test to prove mental illness so its a label being used to control the masses.  A historical example would be when psychiatrists use to label black slaves with "Drapetomania" because they wanted to flee captivity in the 19th century.  Today if you can't handle the stress of being exploited by a company, or can't handle being bullied at school or numerous other social problems then you are labelled with an illness, but its all done in the name of social control.  This applies not only to black people but anyone who doesn't conform.  I've done some video's explaining why psychiatry is a fraud for anyone interested and so have many other people.

Oh wow. Im kinda conflicted because historically and even during contemporary times mental health has definitely exploited people of color. From pervasive misdiagnoses, lack of cultural competence, pathologizing normal behavior, and committing PoC to institutions without their consent because of these things. I also think the nature of healthcare and capitalism fuels how these factors intersect to create an even more pernicious system. As a mental health worker, you can't get paid for much unless you diagnose someone; who has "the most problems"? People of color. Which is why I took a break from pursuing a career in psychology.

On the flip side though, PoC definitely have some mental health challenges because all of the things burdening them. Mental health is a stigmatized thing, especially in our community, so I wouldn't dismiss it entirely. A lot of us really could benefit from seeing a wellness focused clinician. I am currently trying to find one shid.

I will say though, people should be more prone to seeing a counselor rather than a psychologist/psychiatrist. They're trained to tell you about your problems and diagnose you. So I agree with that point too.

Wow I thought it was a larger percentage of block people in the U.K.
