The written contract was in place before the hypothetical verbal one, it can't supercede it.  Anything from that point needs to be in writing to be valid. He has a case but i could also see it not going in his favor, so it's a toss up

Boy if he had been paying half the rent and just magically started paying 50 more, it wouldn't be hard for the judge to deduce wassup.  And as i said, they can't just verbally agree once a written contract is in place. He wouldve needed that to be in writing too for it to be legally binding.  He definitely has a case
