This is why Insecure is so ground breaking.

I was just thinking about this the other day. I was watching Girlfriends and marveling and the diversity: the show boasted an ensemble cast of four Black women of different shades. Insecure is a great example of people fighting against this trope.

this opens a door for conversation about colorism in general.

It's not a one-way thing.  Media reflects what people believe, and people's beliefs are shaped by what they constantly see depicted in the media.

Exactly. They're only going to put what they think people want to see on TV. Unless they intentionally wanna be edgy and challenge the norm
and doing so is a money risk, which to a lot of companies is not worth breaking racial grounds for. They'll forego the power they have to instill change in society just for the profit.

I see.

But from what I remember, colorism within our community began in the fields and the master's house.
Not Channel 9.

A finger should definitely be pointed at Willie before its pointed at Martin

Sure, but people halve been critical about colorism as soon as it began.  They'be been critical of it in the media since media has been around.  The people and the media are both responsible for how they perpetuate colorism.

are you saying dark girls are innately more uncouth than light skinned girls? :plzstop:

SouravMay

I think usually the main is just light, and before everybody is white they give the funny ghetto sidekick slot to a dark one.

Brandy and Countess are the same color but they fit these archetypes in comedy. The put together pretty one, and the obnoxious ghetto sidekick.
