as a reason his sister whom I did defend would give him benefit of the doubt

The benefit of the doubt is plausible when theres no proof of wrongdoing. But when theres evidence, its defense. To try and find twists and turns to explain why someone might be innocent, with evidence and a charge against them, is what defense attorneys do. So yeah.
