It's actually kind of sad, but I don't think it was necessarily to block Cardi.  I think she realizes that her streaming numbers are slipping badly.  So, she's trying to make up for it in sales for the next week.

The timeline is Friday at 12:01am to Thursday at 11:59pm.

So, she could be trying to rebound a little for next week and snatch it back from Cardi or at least stabilize at #2.

But Cardi pretty much has the #1 on lock.  Like 99.9% chance of her being #1 next week.

Very petty on Taylor's part but she kinda has no choice.

LWYMMD was everywhere during it's first week and now no one even talks about it. Shake It Off was in the top 5 of the Hot 100 from August 2014-January 2015 

The hype for Taylor's new era is dwindling FAST. At this rate, her new album isn't gonna open with 1M first week. She needs to release a second single already and pray it smashes.

in what world is her hype dwindling when her album is STILL and has been #1 in preorders
ever since it went up in august?
her album isn't even dropping until november, yet, she's been able to hold the #1 spot
from other artists who's albums are even coming out next week
it means she is SELLING those preorders for her to still be #1.....the hype is there

secondly, you can't compare SIO to LWYMMD..
this is a totally new sound for her, SIO was an earworm and straight up pop with insane replay value
not saying LWYMMD isnt, but it's definitely not the sound anyone expected
