I didn't want to ruin the joke, but that's probably the case here.

A lot of times in conference rooms or offices, the phones will sit over an open hole in the middle of the table.  And there's several ports for you to plug the phone in underneath the table.  Either from the side or the bottom.

A lot of people don't want cords to show.
