Mariah Carey Says She's Inspired by Childish Gambino & Doesn't 'Give a Damn' About the Grammys

Mariah Carey sat down with V Magazine and delivered the exact kind of Mariah Carey interview we've come to expect. The profile covered her upcoming new album, her love for Childish Gambino, and her over-it attitude toward the Grammys.

The iconic pop songstress revealed that she is putting out a ?real,? non-Christmas album with JAY-Z?s Roc Nation, saying her relationship with the rapper began in 1999 when the two worked on ?Heartbreaker? together, off her album Rainbow. As for when it comes out, Carey is very unbothered by deadlines, especially those concerning getting it in on time for a Grammy nomination.

"Frankly, my dear, I don?t give a damn," she told V. "I mean, I have five Grammys. That?s cute. There?s people that have been doing this half the time that have twice as many [Grammys]. I won two Grammys the first year I started, but after that, [the Grammys] are like, 'We don?t go with the people that are selling a lot of records and are popular; we?re gonna go the opposite way.' So I got screwed out of certain years. I wasn?t bitter about it."

She also spoke about her own songwriting, saying she thinks female writers are often overlooked. Then she continues, saying that may have to do with her diva characterization.

?I also have that diva thing attached to me; I mean, I?m sitting here doing an interview in lingerie," she said. "But I was just like, you?re totally gonna understand that this is what I?m gonna wear! Why should I wear something uncomfortable? This is what I like.?

When asked about newer artists, Carey remained optimistic, citing Childish Gambino as an inspiration.
