I?d say both! When you already have a chemical imbalance of any kind, and/or have experienced serious trauma the way he has - the car accident, his mother?s death + who knows what else - self medicating is the quickest way to make yourself go crazy. Drugs will IMO, bring all of that to the surface and you?ll experience that mania people talk about

My childhood best friend went through it and now he?s completely gone, mentally.

wait Rigs!!! I agree completely. Probably both. He could have began to really use opioids to treat his mental illness or the mental illness could have been induced by substance use. Either is really possible given his experiences and both exacerbate the harmful effects of thy other.

I think this and socially being who he is (a self-righetous A-list celebrity surrounded by enablers and explotiers) really incubates all of his inner struggles and we see that play out through the media.
