Recently I came across this article. And it's only made me more interested in a topic thats currently gaining more conversation and I just want more opinions.

How do you define and what do you think gender is?

Truthfully, BEFORE I made friends with a few trans girls, between online and in the real world, I thought the concept of 'gender' was cut/dry. You call yourself a womuh, you're a womuh. You call yourself a man, you're a man. But what does that mean? Some muscles and a haircut? Or some boobs and long hair? Then AFTER I became more exposed to it, AND started working for a trans woman, I realized its kinda superficial, unfortunately.

I read that 80% of trans girls want to transition back, then I read 4% of trans girls want to transition back. The internet is full of lies but personally, I know that 100% of the trans girls I know are comfortable and have no intention on going back to their previous gender.

But every day we become more educated on 'life', and as time goes on we realize America isn't what it claims to me.

Women aren't born to be housewives, and Men aren't born to be emotionless creatures. And with that, the other questions come --

What is a woman? What is a man? The more we move into equality, the more I question what it means to be trans.

I honestly will never know, because I don't feel like I'm a 'woman' in any sense, or that I want to dress like one or physically look like one according to what humans, and more importantly Americans think is one.

But I see a lot of girls(men) wearing wigs and makeup, conventional things associated with women. But does that mean gender is fluid like sexuality(which most people agree is fluid) or does it just mean all of the equality shit spewed these days has the girls more comfortable expressing themselves in every which way possible?

I dunno.

But what do you think fags?

BTW this is mostly written from the perspective of knowing MTF. I don't personally know any FTM to even come up with another view.

MelMel

wow this is too profound for me but in short I believe that there is more than one gender.

People just get confused because of the different labels for it all

Young

I think gender is a very complexed thing

Sure the physical body tells us what is male and female
But on a soul level there?s an entirely different conversation

For me ; I feel as though my flesh is male , but my soul is much more feminine in nature

I feel like a lot of trans people (MTF) feel this way . And would rather see on the outside what they feel on the inside .
However ,I don?t feel the need to become that because I like being male in the physical

I think we all have a duality to us though

Gekkouga

yeah it's a really complicated topic

but I think gender isn't fluid at all. Yeah one day you decide to start dressing like a womuh and living like one but that doesn't neccesarily mean your gender has changed. I think gender, just like sex, is a biological thing that is set in our DNA and sooner or later we always find out what we truly are, which may or may not align with our current body. That's what makes a real trans person in my view. Their soul/essence truly rejects that body and everything that it represents, like you're fucking trapped inside another person's body which doesn't mesh with your way of thinking or even breathing, eating etc the simple stuff. Like two pieces that won't fit no matter how hard you try.

and while gender is prob locked the notions of bein a womuh/man are wide as fuck. You can basically be whatever you want, if you want to dress like the opposite gender or a mixture whateves it's fine  but your biological gender, much like your sex, will always be one and only one.

I just think of it more and more as a construct every day

Some people fit into boxes, some don't. Some gorls change it up based on mood, etc.

Look at these rappers today in terms of their gender expression

Rough, tough, hyper masc, homophobic argh

But will fight w/ Demetria down the street for the latest choker, gucci, versac' or denim jeans

Meanwhile a decade ago hypermasc culture meat baggy everything, chains/crosses, etc. Its interesting. I just say live your best life.

Ultra goodbye ciao cya gorl

I honestly can't come up with a solid definition of gender. I think this is in part due to the fact that I recognize that so much of concepts like gender, orientation, identity etc are socially/culturally constructed. Way back yonder in history some group in power ( probably some fuckin crackers) decided that there should be a social taxonomy that allows for said group and others to be able to "define" someone else based on presenting characteristics. I think this is where we fucked up as humans because we reinforced this concept throughout the centuries by multiple methods (religion, gender roles, family, community, culture, power, education etc) so much that human identity has become so rigid. Folks struggle to understand anything that goes outside of their own perception of how someone's identity SHOULD look. That's the crux of why gender or identity politics is such a hot topic/issue.

With that being said I think people often operate from this "definition" based way of perceiving because it makes us feel more informed, more solidified in our own beliefs, and like we have a grasp on who someone is without actually really knowing who they are. We see shit like this all the time --if it looks like a duck its a duck-- this dismisses the aspect of humanity that makes us unique as organisms, the freedom to exist the ways that we want without having to always label that. Granted most people don't take up that freedom because of all those conditioning methods I mentioned earlier, but we still have the right to do so should we decide its safe. The whole Masc vs Fem thing is a conditioned thing also, we don't freely get to partake in how that's constructed because those before us have already done that. We do get to decide if those definitions are congruent with who we are. Both sexes display masc and fem energies, so if both are fully capable of doing so, what does any of it really mean definitively?

Gonna preface my thoughts with  I do think it's best to let folks define their gender in whatever ways they want. However, I have some concerns. For example, I can't be mad at a Cisgender woman who gets upset about a Transwoman who gets an operation and suddenly is considered a woman. Yes, the trans woman is a WOMAN by gender but does she share the same experiences as a female born woman? Is womanhood simply defined by presentation or is there more to it biologically?

I recently went with a friend to an abortion clinic for the 1st time and the air in there was indescribable. To see so many women in there alone, saddened, crying, and some were even happy- really put things into perspective for me. Men and Transwomen will NEVER experience what that feels like.

I also think that people in power via academia come up with terms that are supposedly describing some group of people. Suddenly we all have to learn this new term and abide by it or else offend someone. However, we don't speak to the power of academia while doing so. Is this term really describing a group of people or someone who was able to get a platform to voice their gender experiences? Often times the group of people intended to be defined are left out of that decision making process because they don't have the privilege to sit at the table with those who make those who do. I kinda laid into one of my professors who told me I shouldn't use the term homosexual (to describe myself) anymore, the psych field is going with using gay instead. Why am I getting a memo on how to appropriately describe myself from someone I don't even know? Gender studies are getting a lil crazy coming up with so many terms and what's in or out.

So yeah, do what the hell you want. Define yourself for you. Just be aware of the implications behind each descriptor because they affect the way you're perceived/treated in society.
