That's totally up to the parent.

There's definitely a social price for kids to pay when they step outside of what is deemed gender appropriate (bullying, etc), so I can understand some parents wanting to keep their kids on a "straight and narrow" mess.

As much as I believe in freedom of expression I would have to be certain that my child fully understood the consequences of stepping outside of the box before I allowed them to do it. Much rather do that than end up in jail when they return home with a bruise on their mug or even one hair out of fucking place.

I'd let this parent be a parent.

But would you speak up in this situation at a toy store, babe?

If anything I'd blame society. These parents are just being mindful of what is expected of their child based on the gender.

Making sure they groom their son to be a "great husband" or their daughter to be a "lady", etc.
