beyonce's hair colorist Rita talks about how she maintains Bey's hair through all the color so she doesn't experience alot of breakage.

Over the past couple of years, Beyonc? has proven to be the ultimate blonde chameleon. Vogue's September cover star has sported virtually every flaxen shade under the sun, from her classic caramel-streaked waves to the peroxided waist-skimming ringlets she wore at Coachella. And as of the latest leg of her On the Run II Tour with husband Jay-Z, Bey's blonde is lighter and brighter than ever before. Here, her colorist Rita Hazan dishes on how to go?and stay?platinum like the powerhouse herself.

Find the Right Shade of Blonde for Your Skin Tone
"[Beyonc?'s] platinum blonde is a warmer neutral because she needs to stay away from cool and ashy tones," explains Hazan of what illuminates the singer's supernatural complexion best. "It's more sun-kissed where it has a brightness to it, but it's not orange." (Fair or ruddier skin tones do better with cooler, icier tones, says Hazan) The color pro also keeps Beyonc?'s roots shadowed so that she can take the ends ultra light. "She needs that darkness around the face, otherwise it just washes her out especially with the bright lights on stage," she says.

Tweak It for the Season
After Beyonc? kicked up her honey blonde to platinum earlier in the summer, Hazan opted to take her even more megawatt this past week. "She'd just come back from vacation and the more of a glow you have, the blonder you can go," she explains. Then, she added lowlights in for an end-of-season "baby blonde" effect. "You know when you see a little kid on the beach, they?re towhead-ish with darker roots and blonde streaks?" she poses. "It's all natural and the more they sit in the sun, the lighter it gets. That's what I wanted to create for her."

No matter where Beyonc?'s latest dye job falls on the brunette-to-blonde spectrum, her well-placed highlights ensure it has plenty of depth as she works the stage with her trusted wind machine on stage. "I lighten random pieces and put some lowlights in strategic places, like around her hairline and scattered throughout her hair, so it's not so solid," she explains. "When she whips her hair, you can see the dimension and how the hair flows."
