For a TV show where the actors aren't related in the first place it would make it harder to make it believable that they are a family. In real life you already have chemistry and resemblance beyond skin color, it also allows more complex scenarios. In fiction the more you have to explain the more does it hinder the plot. Having Jussie with Akon's complexion would have been difficult to integrate seemlessly into the show.
