Serena Williams named GQ Woman of the Year -- but cover sparks controversy

(CNN)Tennis great Serena Williams has been named GQ's Woman of the Year -- but the magazine's cover has caused a stir on social media with many questioning why "Woman" was in quotes.

The 37-year-old, called "The Champion" by the magazine, features in one of four covers of December's 'Men of the Year' issue wearing a black long-sleeve turtleneck leotard.
GQ, which first made women part of its Men of the Year honorees in 2003, included the American alongside actors Michael B Jordan, Henry Golding and Jonah Hill.

Serena's friend and designer she's been working with was responsible for this. It's his "style" apparently but I personally didn't care for it. Especially given her history dealing with the tranny comments and people questioning her biology.

Maybe Serena wanted to make a statement or simply didn't care. I just didn't care for it at all. It takes away from the cover.

Magazine editorial staff be so out of touch with people of color it's pathetic. I don't really care for MBJ's cover either. He's sex occasionally but looks like Bill Cosby on the cover.
