QuoteRobert Sylvester Kelly, better known to the world as R. Kelly, has been seen as everything from a sex icon to a one-man gospel choir, a musical genius to an out-of-touch artist (most of the ?Trapped in the Closet? series) and eventually the subject of an episode of the Boondocks. One thing that can?t be denied is that he?s reinvented himself time and time again to remain relevant 20 years after the release of his first solo album. He has worked with some of the greatest artists of our time during some of the greatest points of their careers, such as the Notorious B.I.G. (?F*cking You Tonight?) and Jay-Z (?Fiesta,? as well as two collaborative albums and a tour that never quite worked out.)In a world where the artists considered to be the future of R&B were nominated for ?Best Urban Contemporary Album? by the Grammy committee, the lines of what R&B is and is not have become blurred.R&B now seems to be split into two worlds of sex on wax or pure, raw emotion mixed in with vocal acrobatics. The reason that R. Kelly is probably the best R&B artist of our time is his ability to do both, and more, extremely well.Growing up in the Southside of Chicago, this would be the same area that raised the King of R&B, there were times when you couldn?t go a day without hearing one of his songs on the radio. It may have just been the support of his hometown, but it seemed that Kellz was dropping a new joint every week. After working with a group by the name of Public Announcement, Kelly hit the scene with the sex-inspired 12 Play in 1993, with hits like ?Your Body?s Callin?,? ?It Seems Like You?re Ready? and ?Bump n? Grind.?For the rest of his career, R. Kelly dropped one hit album after another every couple of years with a slew of hits in between. He?s released multiple ?Greatest Hits? albums because he really has enough to make more than one.The self-titled R. Kelly album went along with the sound and reputation that he had made for himself in the world with songs such as, ?You Remind Me Of Something? and ?Down Low (Nobody Has To Know),? featuring The Isley Brothers.Just when it may have started to seem that R. Kelly was a one-trick pony, he started to show the world that he could write great songs that had lyrical substance outside of the many ways he wanted to please a woman. His R. Kelly album featured songs, ?When a Woman?s Fed Up? and the universal classic, ?I Believe I Can Fly.?As a matter of fact, the same generation that Kelly may have played a part in creating, could have also sang ?I Believe I Can Fly? in their kindergarten graduations or every time they watched ?Space Jam? like I did.Who would?ve guessed that this creator of baby-making classics could come out with an internationally acclaimed song that resembles what one could hear in a church? I?m not exaggerating the ?internationally acclaimed? aspect either. I?ve traveled halfway across the world and heard the gospel choir-assisted melody being played by my Italian host family. His next album, TP-2.com, allowed Kelly to experiment with a variety of different styles. He included the solemn and reminiscent, ?I Wish,? the radio-friendly, ?Fiesta? and ?Feelin? On Yo Booty,? to stay true to his original fan base.Ten years after his solo debut, Chocolate Factory, R.Kelly showed that the King of R&B had more hits up his sleeves. Having always put on for his hometown of Chicago, Kellz took it one step further with ?Step In the Name of Love? and the remix to commemorate the smooth style of dance born in the city.Perhaps the most memorable song on the album is ?Ignition (Remix.)? This is actually the first song I remember going out of my way to memorize line-by-line; I had no clue what I was listening to, but I couldn?t help but go ?toot-toot? and ?beep-beep? along with the lyrics. This may have served as a re-introduction of R. Kelly to a young audience that knew of him, but now got to experience him in the present.Showing that he wasn?t too old to remain relevant, the recently turned 36-year-old made sure that the world knew who he was. He seemed to hop on a remix of every song that he could, including T-Pain?s ?I?m N Luv (Wit a Stripper.)?Kelly then went on to create the ?Trapped In the Closet? series. No matter how you feel about the ?hip-hopera? series as a whole, it?s hard to deny that the first few chapters were extremely entertaining and captivating. Plus, the ability to come up with a total of 33 chapters is an impressive one.Filled with scandal and R.Kelly hilariously playing every role, the series seemed to get more complicated as it went on. By the time that Kelly got to the 12th chapter, the series had included a midget hiding in a cupboard, a fresh-out brother-in-law and a nosey neighbor. The series is expected to go all the way up to at least 54 chapters; that takes a lot of work. Even I?m guilty of watching most of the series on more than one occasion out of disbelief and looking for a good laugh. All the while, R. Kelly has released solid content including four solo albums filled with radio hits, baby makers and love songs.20 years later, R. Kelly is working on his 12th solo-project, Black Panties.Coming from the same city as some of the greatest soul/R&B singers of all-time, such as Sam Cooke, Curtis Mayfield and Chaka Khan, R. Kelly is arguably the best R&B artist of our time and can boast a 20-year career composed of multiple multi-platinum albums.
