Very good article. Especially this part:
"In recent years Minaj's career has been less about the music and more about the controversy created. Her Queen Radio station has often been a vehicle for grand and inane proclamations and battle cries. Her talent hasn't diminished, but it has been weakened by peculiar creative decisions, such as collaborating with the controversial SoundCloud rapper 6ix9ine. Last August, she cancelled the North American leg of her joint tour with Future and Queen lost the chart-topping slot to Scott's Astroworld, something that she didn't take gracefully.
Her volatility has led to some claiming that Minaj's retirement is nothing of the sort, merely another proclamation at the end of a tantrum. TMZ.com reports that she has time booked in the studio until October and has been working on new material in recent weeks. Cynics might suggest Minaj is merely weary of the social media onslaught and wants a break.
But she has also been planning to take a break to have a family for years. All the way back in 2014, when Minaj was still deemed worthy of the term "Minajesty", the rapper made her personal plans apparent. She told Dazed that she intended to "stop what I'm doing and be a mother and wife", but only once she has released five albums and earn "500 million dollars first. That figure has been in my brain for a long time. I want to be the female who earned the same amount of money that the Jay Zs and the Puffys were able to earn. I feel like when I reach my 500-million-dollar goal. Then no other woman in rap will ever feel like they can't do what these men have done."
That Minaj seems like an artist so removed from the one we've seen in recent years, one who was far less easy to criticise. "Cardi happened. Right before her "retirement" announcement she was in her DMs at 1 am in the morning arguing with a hip hop blog that said they felt they knew Cardi more than Nicki because of "Be Careful", and Nicki needs to make more songs explaining who she is. Nicki had yet another meltdown, and said she was retiring. Since Bodak Yellow went number one I don't think she has had a good nights sleep. Smh
