Stuff like this is a problem because it flies in the face of what many white privilege deniers believe. Many white, along with white-adjacent POC still hold to this mythology of American meritocracy. "Oh if you just work hard, go to school/get your education, you can accomplish anything in America!" That's the type of do-for-self individualism that strokes the flames of "pull yourself up by your bootstraps".

Yes, hard work can serve you well in life, but wealth and social capital can remove many, if not all of those "hard work" barriers to success. I'm sure many white people will only view this as a class issue, but race definitely plays a role here as well.
