I saw this old lady from Suriname on the news the other day and it was heartbreaking to hear when slavery ended they just had to be grateful. You couldn't talk about how wrong it was, it was better to leave it in the past. Now I know the generation who went through the Second World War felt the same way, just never talk about the pain again because it is in the past. But at least a lot of the survivors hated nazis and even Germans with passion. There was no 'let's be grateful they are gone' attitude. That just sounds like Stockholm syndrome.

There's a lot of posturing from media outlets using this as some sort of example to other black people to forgive their oppressors and help white people sleep better at night. I also see a lot of people unfairly bashing this man's family for grieving on their own terms and finding their way to healing through forgiveness.

They're operating from a place of Christian rhetoric that often pacifies white folks violence because Jesus forgave but it is inherently violent and traumatic to not call racism out for what it is (some made up construct that has allowed white folk to feel superior) and has been the center of the original genocide against Indigenous people and enslaved Africans.
