I seriously don't understand why babies are automatically given their biological father's last name at birth. Men should really have to work (ie. marry, provide, etc) in order to pass their surnames to their offspring.

That's my point. Women automatically give their children the father's last name without commitment/dedication but it doesn't make sense.
