Wearing a face mask is certainly not an iron-clad guarantee that you won't get sick – viruses can also transmit through the eyes and tiny viral particles, known as aerosols, can penetrate masks. However, masks will probably make little difference if you're just walking around town or taking a bus so there is no need to bulk-buy a huge supply.

which means they do work in some way at least. And there are also masks that work for your own protection if you wear them.

the few hours that they do work, its to protect the OUTSIDE from your breath, not the other way around (surgical masks). construction masks and things of that sort do work to protect you from the outside, but there is no air filtration happening, so they are absolutely no protection from a pathogen like this.

if everyone wears a mask to protect the others won't that protect you too? So yes, masks are useful as I said.
