I was talking with one of my white coworkers, we were discussing vacation plans and mess for 2016 and I expressed my desire to visit countries in Africa. He was like "OMG really? Why Africa? Are you sure , it's kind of dangerous over there...."

First of all, did you really just ask me why? Do you not see the color of my got damn skin Do you think black people popped out of nowhere in America?  Secondly, I had to restrain myself from getting hood on him because I actually like him and I KNOW it's not his fault that he's that ignorant when it comes to Africa.

I politely schooled him and let him know how diverse the CONTINENT is. It's not one country, with one economy and one ruler. I had to be straightforward with him and advise him NOT to let the images on television fool him. Yes those images are real but there are so many different sides to this CONTINENT. CONTINENT.

CONTINENT.

He still wasn't getting it so I changed the topic of our conversation before it went completely left. Cuz he was really upsetting me. It's one thing to misspeak out of ignorance, but it's another thing to remain close minded when the FACTS are being given to you. I was two minutes away from reading him and his got damn ancestors who brought me here to begin with.

The real danger for us began once we got off those got damn ships. If you really wanna talk about danger

The real danger is strolling into the wrong neighborhood with a bag of Skittles in your hand.

I can't blame them because there are many of us who are (understandably) ignorant of the continent and it's actually the place we descend from. I can just imagine what white people think Africa is.

But still. If I'm telling you what it is, shut the fuck up and listen. Don't argue with me.
That is the last thing any white person should be doing. If they want to remain cordial with me.

On one hand you said you can understand why the person is ignorant of africa, then you're mad coz he hasn't 'got it' after one 'schooling'. lol. As if anything can be changed after one chat.

I'm sure you wouldn't understand and dispel your own ignorance of the Asian continent and middle eastern region and of the muslim-terrorist political agenda after one chat.

Change happens painstakingly slowly and only when its relaxed and positive.

Just relax Frodo! Don't let your new interest make u angry, enjoy it and converse with others with love and patience.

You're not black, you don't live in America, so you'll never know how it feels for a white person whose ancestors who were responsible for bringing you here, to tell you that Africa is dangerous place that should not be visited.

Don't tell me what I should and shouldn't be angry about. You damn sure got in your feelings on here when people assumed you were a terrorist. You didn't sit and "understand" their position and wait for the educational cards to play out. Zuzu, don't do it.

His comment was just really ignorant. Some emotions cannot be controlled. Feeling offended is one of them. Which is why I changed the topic of our conversation. I didn't curse him out, or call him names. I just chose to talk about something else because I clearly saw that him grasping the concept would not be something accomplished in the conversation we were having. And that's fine. We're still friends, I still like him.

So ZuZu's comments are absolutely unnecessary. I'm well aware that certain ignorance cannot be cured overnight.
