A lot of AAs are ignorant to what Africa really looks like because all they see/know are those Ethiopian and Kenyan feed the children commercials.

its a shame, but Likewise Africans only see the ghetto hood side of us so that's what they think we are.

so once again it's white people fault

It's not white peoples fault if people are willing buying into the stereotypes.

Dr Naomi Campbell

well not white people, but the Media, so white people indirectly

I've seen Africans on several occasions criticize AA's for not having passports, being less traveled than them, and not "experiencing Africa" when they don't realize that the vast majority of us are working poor, and can not afford luxuries like casual, international travel. If they harbor the kind of sentiment towards us like what was seen in that thread, why bother?

Dr Naomi Campbell

Did you not see how that thread got started ?  :dead:
It literally goes both ways

not so much willingly buying into a stereotype when you don't know what ur viewing IS simply a stereotype
!!!!!!
I mean there weren't any alternative showcasings back then

jtwoeleven

Okay, so then what's the solution? If we all can see that white owned media is the culprit, then why aren't people going after the major media companies putting the false images out there, as opposed to fighting amongst each other?

Dr Naomi Campbell

They are.
Just because a few dickheads are having a diaspora war on Twitter it doesn't speak to the wider diaporama community, overall there's lots of inclusiveness and support for each other

I mean if that's all you're shown wtf else can you do? I realize not everyone actively looks up random facts like I do so I don't fault people for not knowing what I do.

If all you're seeing is Feed the Children ads from Ethiopia, Slave trades in Libya, Children  in Wars in Congo, Bono Haram in Nigeria and nobody even making the distinction that these are totally diffErrant countries of course the casual girl is gonna be like wtf cause they aren't being shown the regular normal mess like the beautiful cities, the pretty landscapes, the modern people doing Modern things.

Same for how African Americans are portrayed worldwide. That's part of the reason we're fighting for more media representation

That's an excuse I refuse to accept. I've learned so much information from Twitter, it's crazy. There's lot of information about what Africa was/is really like, shared in various books, articles, etc. The same is true about the history of African Americans in America. At some point, we have to turn off our TVs and find other sources of information, there's too much out there (not saying you specifically). At this juncture, I'd say anyone who still participates in the ignorance on either side either doesn't want to be informed, or they somehow benefit from the ignorance 🤷🏾‍♂️
